Our love of Tulum is undoubtedly tied to our stay at Posada Los Mapaches. Coming from Valladolid and its smattering of backpackers, Tulum was quite touristy. Generally this would totally have turned us off a town but with tips from Mapaches' charismatic proprietor, Chelo, we were able to enjoy all the amazing things Tulum has to offer while barely noticing the crowds ( except to exclaim, "WOW! I'm really happy we're not trying to ( insert tourist attraction here) right now! Thanks for the advice, Chelo!"
Tulum has a spectacular beach. The ruins are gorgeous (especially when you get to experience them sans other tourists). The Grand Cenote is magical. You're just a short collectivo ride from Akumal and it's curious turtles and there are endless food possibilities! With patience and a few tips, Tulum should definitely make your Yucatan Peninsula itinerary.
